What are your favorite ways to unwind in the summertime?

When you move into a newly constructed part of the neighborhood, it's unlikely that you or any of your neighbors are going to have a decent yard. For the first year, your yard is a prime spot for mud-wrestling and dirt pies. That's about it. So, when you start out the summer like this, and you haven't even finished your patio yet, you come up with new ways to unwind in the summer heat.

Sangria

Sangria night in the driveways! Did you know that if you google "sangria AND crystal light" you get about 7,104 search results that all sound equally delicious and refreshing? I'm going to start trying them one after another, after another, after another. . .

Here's one to start you off, from George Stella of Food Network.

There is nothing better than surrounding yourself with good friends and neighbors in a ring of lawn chairs. Kids entertain themselves when outside and adults can relax and catch-up.

My other favorite way to unwind when I'm lucky enough to be ocean side? Take one low beach chair, one good book, a cool breeze coming off the water, and the perfect location sea-side where the foamy waves lap at your toes. Ahh, imagine that. . .

Here, you don't have to. . .

Now, picture a cool water bottle stuck in the sand as your bottle-holder, a packet of Crystal Light's Raspberry Green Tea, and that's a little slice of heaven right there.

I also spend much of my summer completely consumed with a good book (or 12). I try to keep summer reading light and fun. Next on my list: Mennonite in a Little Black Dress, followed by The Host. Who says English teachers have to read great works of art all the time?

Crystal Light Review: Staying Hydrated

How do you stay hydrated and fresh in the summer heat?

I get a lot of email forward's. We all do. But last week, I got one, that if even a tiny bit true, blew my mind. The basic premise of the email was to drink more water and to avoid carbonated beverages. It listed many reason as to why for each one, but there was one in particular about water that really got me thinking!

It said this: our bodies are so de-programmed when it comes to hydration that many times, our body will send us the hungry signal when in fact, our body is really just in need of fluids. I thought about how many times I sit around and snack when I shouldn't really even be hungry and figured I would try to drink a glass of water first, each time I'm feeling the urge to snack.

It is absolutely amazing how much less I am snacking since I adopted this philosophy.

Because I am an outdoors girl and am always working on my yard and perennial gardens, I am frequently spending many hours outside in extreme heat. Bottled water is a wonderful thing to have on hand, especially when Crystal Light offers little packets you can dump right into your bottle, shake and enjoy.

I found some great hints for keeping hydrated this summer that I'd like to share with you courtesy of Brigham and Women's Hospital:
  • Have a glass of water when you first get up.
  • Keep a glass of water next to the bed.
  • Enjoy an herbal tea in the afternoon or evening (Crystal Light has some awesome ones!)
  • Carry water with you if you are away for long periods of time.
  • Drink before you get thirsty.
  • Limit sugary, caffeinated beverages (yet another reason to try one of Crystal Light's many varieties).
  • Choose drinks with 10 or fewer calories.
  • Know the signs of dehydration (headache, light-headedness, fatigue, flushed skin).

Did you know that Crystal Light offers "Sunrise" beverages that contain 100% of the recommended dosage of Vitamin C, as well as a variety of other tea's and some mixes that are even infused with extra antioxidants to help with immunity, etc.? To see all the varieties, please visit here.

Olay Total Effects Body Wash

I am a connoisseur of body wash. Just ask my husband. I rarely come home from the grocery store without some kind of body wash. I am always trying new ones and hoping they will actually do what they say they will. I am one dry skinned girl during the winter and nothing ever seems to help.

Olay Total Effects Body Wash totally does help.

Olay Total Effects is supposed to improve elasticity, relieve dryness, deeply condition skin, brighten dull skin, even skin tone, smooth rough skin and minimize the appearance of dry lines.

After receiving a sample from Olay via MyBlog Spark, I paced myself and used the entire bottle over the course of several weeks. The wash itself is a thick one. In other words, you won't end up using half the bottle after just one use. It lathers nicely and a little really does go a long way. Not only does it smell really nice, but the results when it comes to my skin were pretty amazing. Dry patches completely disappeared and even the scaly parts on my hands were greatly improved. After a month of using it, I don't know if I'm younger looking (I'm fairly critical of my wrinkles), but I can definitely say I'm more moisturized than I've been in a very long time.

After only one use, I can definitely agree with their claim that my skin was softer. It's one body wash that is going to go on my list for repeat usage. It's not simply a soap people. This stuff is serious.

Because I like the results so much, I'm going to give one lucky reader a $10 Walmart gift card, courtesy of Olay and MyBlog Spark, so you can try it for yourself. All you need to do to be entered to win is leave a comment telling your best secret for staying young. Knock my socks off people; now it's your turn. . .

Magnificent Manicure Kit

When I was in high school, chemistry class was a real drag. I barely passed. The lab smelled terrible and the experiments we did scared the living daylights out of me. Bunsen burners are scary people; admit it.

However, if chemistry had been made relevant to me, I might have had a different opinion about it. Enter the Magnificent Manicure Kit.

 Manicure

Named one of the best toys of the year, I can definitely see why. My husband, who happens to have a degree in chemistry, jumped right on board with this fancy toy. The girls spent an hour, sitting at a table, mixing things and creating their very own manicure materials including fragranced lotion and buffing cream.

When all was said and done, they had learned a bit about cosmetic chemistry and they both had beautiful nails to show for it. And, even better, the husband had helped them. While the "experimental" part is actually pretty simple, the girls couldn't help but feel like they could now get jobs at Clinique Cosmetics.

The toy completed occupied them and they actually learned something too. How often does that happen at the same time? While using the Magnificent Manicure Kit, kids will be able to make their hands silky with crystal mud, get to soak hands in a sea-salt scrub, create their own custom scented lotion, and buff and shine their nails. It's like a little kid spa in a box.

If I had to find a negative, it's that you can only do it once. I mean, sure you can give yourself manicures, but the actual mixing and making only happens one time. The girls enjoyed that part so much that it would have been nice if they could have had some options for future play, maybe several different scented lotions or something along those lines.

The manicure kit is for ages 8 and up, but with strict supervision, I'm sure younger kids could potentially enjoy it as well. The kit retails for about $18 and you can find it everywhere from Big Box retailers to small creative toy outlets online. The maker of this kit? Elmers of all people; you know, the glue people. How about that.
