But Wait, There’s More
On Friday, I saw my surgeon about my wrist and thumb. My wrist has been bothering me for years on and off. While playing a spirited game of capture the flag, I fell and jammed my wrist while at church camp. I was in the 5th grade and the injury was a real problem because holding the hair dryer while hanging upside down to create that big hair look was pretty much impossible. I looked like crap for the entire weekend and when I returned from camp, my Mom decided it was a sprain, wrapped it and that was that.
For years now, I’ve had issues with it being sore on and off and a few weeks ago, it ramped up considerably and began affecting my thumb. Holding the bottom of Lil C’s jacket while trying to zip it up became near impossible because my thumb had that numbing pain kind of feeling. I decided I should have it checked.
The x-rays came back normal and my surgeon came to the conclusion that I must be starting to miss him. Also, I have general wear and tear in my wrist (tendon issues) and the beginnings of a "trigger thumb." I burst out laughing. How does a girl get a trigger thumb anyway? Although it’s not "catching" yet, he told me that if it gets worse, it will start to catch and feel even more icky (my word, not his) than it does now. He prescribed ice and ibuprofen and told me that if it gets worse, he’ll inject it. He said that it’s common after using crutches and that mine is not permanent and will stop bothering me. He’s right because it already feels a little better.
We also had a nice conversation about how poison ivy was going to kill me. He probably wrote in my chart that I am totally falling apart and sort of mental, and that would sort of be accurate.
Over the weekend, the poison ivy was getting insane. The blisters were getting larger and the itching was uncontrollable so it was prednisone for me. Within a few hours, the poison was already drying up and I was getting some relief. I have a day left of the prescription and yesterday, I started breaking out in hives. They’re random, one on my finger, one on my palm, a couple on my legs, a cluster of them around my elbows, and I have just about had it. So, now I think that I’m probably itching from the prednisone (or one of the many concoctions I put on the poison to help it dry up and go away) which makes me wonder which is worse: poison ivy or hives?
Can a girl catch a break already? Please!?!
I *just* blogged about how supplementing ibuprofen and ice packs with JD goes a long way toward alleviating pain. (One of my commenter suggested Tequila shooters.)
If you need to know any exercises to help release trigger thumb, I became an expert after developing it, along with pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. It is such a disgusting feeling and seeing as you have to keep bending it just to see “will it still get stuck?” and then feel that pop as you straighten it it tends to get worse. I hope you’re back to being healthy soon!
Good lord woman… what’s going on up there?
Keep repeating: That which does not kill us makes us stronger. 🙂
That’s funny that you mention hives, because while I have never had poison ivy (or oak, where I live), I just randomly, for absolutely no reason that I can figure, broke out into hives for the past 48 hours. Huge ones. All over my legs and torso and some on my arms. Luckily not my face. But they come and go and disappear and reappear and itch like mad, and I was wondering if it was worse than poison oak (which, at least for most people, is concentrated on a much smaller area.) Maybe you can let me know.
If my wife was suffering like that, it would kill me just from the sympathy pains!
Oh yeah, prednisone, your best friend. I feel bad for not mentioning/suggesting it before. I had to get an injection and then take it for awhile when Mama caused me to get poison ivy on my face all around my eye. That was when the woman at work said, “Oh, I’m glad it’s just poison ivy. I thought you had shingles!”
You’re a wreck. I went to the ortho today and he said I was doing great and can start more intense pt. Which means I use 2 lbs weights and the red rope. I’m doing much better thanks.
Oh dear, I’m so sorry. That sucks. 🙁 And regarding your house sale, it’s a pain in the ass, because it’s an AWESOME time to buy (relatively), and a HORRID time to sell. We had folks come in and tell our agent, “We love this house, and we’re going to do whatever it takes to make it happen”, and then dry up and go away, waiting for the bottom of the market. Very frustrating.
I hope your hand feels better SOON.
My head is full of random jingles and theme songs, so I apologize, but this was the first thing that came to mind when you asked for a break…

Man, you need a fresh start all around!
New house, new SKIN, new knee…and a healthy booster shot of patience waiting for them all.
Hang in there, we’re all pulling for ya!
With my ACL, I’ve learned to appreciate “misery loves company on a whole new level”. I’m so sorry for your poison ivy, trigger thumb, and still tender knee! But, thank you, it made me feel better after a particularly crappy post-surgery doctors visit yesterday. Hang in there!
I know you are thinking the alcohol caused your hives but I swear it didnt!!!!
