27 Days
There’s something about "less than four weeks" that instills an absolute sense of urgency when it comes to packing and moving. I picked up boxes at the liquor store and egg boxes from the grocery store. I also put my uncle on alert that he should save boxes for me from his beer distributor store. One thing is for certain: our new neighbors will think we like to drink. . . a lot.
While Lil C is gladly helping to pack things, Big I is protesting and acting very much like a teenager. She’s also having a fit whenever I pack something that belongs to her. I put an end to that by telling her that Daddy would like to throw away all her toys, while I would only like to pack them. She seems to be helping a bit more now.
Yesterday, we went to my parent’s house for a birthday party for my sister/4th of July celebration. We ended up staying for 10 hours. About five of those were spent playing Mexican Train Domino’s. I realized that living there for under three months might not be all that horrible. We got along fine, had fun with the girls and didn’t get home until almost midnight. I’m feeling more relaxed about the whole thing. After all the noise the girls made yesterday though, I doubt my parents are feeling the same way.
After Tuesday, I’ll be completely relaxed. The home inspector is coming early Tuesday morning and since we waived our home inspection when we moved into this house, we’re slightly apprehensive about it. We’ve been here almost five years. Any problem that came up, we promptly fixed, but the not knowing is the anxiety-inducing part. So, if you could all just cross everything that it goes well, we’d appreciate you assuming the position one last time.
Mr. BBM and I have been packing up the basement today and there’s so much more work to be done. I promise I won’t talk only about the house and packing and moving for the next few months, so stick around because I’ll start posting house building progress with photographic evidence once it starts within the next two weeks.
Let me tell you about urgency in packing.
After 3.5 months of no interest, we got an offer on our house on Tuesday the 25th. contracts were signed on both the sale of our house and the purchase of our new place on Thursday the 27th. We close (on BOTH) on July the 21st. We will be on vacation in NY and RI from July 8th-15th. AND we are all attending the All Tang Soo Do Nationals in Dallas July 17th-20th. So that leaves, ummm, what — 14 total days to work with for packing up a 2700 sq. ft. 4BR/3B house. Luckily my in-laws were here all week and pitched in — we’re pretty much ready to go, give or take a day of last minute stuff. And we are also able to lease our current place for a week or so before the new owners need to move in, so we have a nice 4-5 days of overlap to work with onthe actual move. But still — aaaarrrrghhh!
Are you moving everything into one of those Pods or just keeping it in storage? (The Pods I’m talking about are http://www.pods.com/.
Wow, hope eveything goes smoothly.
Adam – I had never heard of a pod. I checked out the video. wow, interesting!
BBM, that is an option.

I don’t envy all the packing. But what I do envy you is the purging of old stuff. When we moved, I got rid of so much useless stuff. I need to “pack” again just so I can do that. My basement is a MESS!Eveyrthing will be crossed Tuesday for your inspection. Please update us then so we can uncross Tuesday PM! : )
I ma not seeing your blog page properly . its just me or my firefox is playing up with me? Have you checked your page on firefox 3 ?
Note on the home building. When they prep the area for pouring the foundation, if it’s a slab rather than a basement, get in there and check before they pour! In our development, the builders were frequently lazy about making sure the blocked out area was actually level, so some areas would be thin. When my husband did a pre-check of ours there was a high spot in the middle that would have made our supposed 8″ slab only 2″ thick. He made them re-level it, and somehow, ours was the only foundation slab in our row that didn’t have visible cracks by the time they finished the frame (we checked.).
If I were moving in four weeks, I’d be picking up boxes at the liquor store too! 🙂
I’ve been offline for nearly a week. We took a leap of faith and moved without selling our house. With 3 days before the movers were coming, I agreed to a showing. The house was stacked with boxes, the floors weren’t swept, and I even stayed and packed the kitchen while they looked at the house.
They put in an offer
We accepted the day before we left
We are set to close on July 31st, but they have already asked if we would be ok with closing early.
We are renting the house we want to buy in Georgia. We are hoping we can get everything together and close here before Aug 1st.
We moved over July 4th weekend, and let me tell you, it was NOT easy. I just got my internet up today. We still don’t have tv. The satellite people showed up the day before our movers and because we didn’t have a TV in the house, they left. When I tried to reschedule, they said it would be a week before they could come back out. Hopefully I will have TV on Saturday. Right now I’m watching 2 fuzzy stations with rabbit ears and doing LOTS of unpacking to pass the time.
