Making Peace with the Morning
I don’t do mornings. I mean, if I have to, I will. Three days a week, it’s my responsibility to get Big I on the very early bus. The days when it’s not? I’m praying that Lil C sleeps in until at least 9.
So, when I was told last week that I had to schedule my physical therapy early in the morning since the office will be closing for the afternoon on one of my days, I begrudgingly made my appointment and told myself one day wouldn’t kill me. It’s true. One day wouldn’t kill me, but one day quickly turned into two days when I showed up early today (not the day I was supposed to show up early).
My PT looked at me kind of funny when I walked in. "What?" I asked him, "not used to seeing me in the morning or do I look that bad?"
He laughed and said, "No, it’s just that you’re not supposed to be here until after 3 today."
"But you have a half day today!" I said.
"That’s Friday," he said and laughed some more.
I hate exercising in the morning and now I’m going to have to do it twice in one week. Apparently I’m trying to kill myself.
I spent the entire weekend slacking on my exercises. I figured that my dancing to one Prince song and "In Da Club" was exercise enough. I was sore after that, even though I mainly danced on one leg (Nothing can hold me back when Prince comes on).
What I found out this morning is that morning exercise actually loosens the knee up a whole lot better than my normal daily routine of walking back and forth from the kitchen for more coffee. In fact, I doubt I even needed more coffee when I got home because I’m wide awake. There’s nothing quite like a brisk walk on the treadmill to get you going.
I’m not saying this is going to become a routine thing, and I definitely won’t say I’m happy about having to wake up and go work out on Friday morning too. I’m just saying that maybe mornings and I can agree to be friends.

I love mornings. Sometimes there’s nothing better than getting up at 5:30 AM.
I do not do mornings well. I get up because I have to go to work, but when I freelanced exclusively I never made an appointment before 11 am.
And yet tomorrow I have an appointment at my son’s school at 7:30 am. In the morning. And I couldn’t get the to change it. *sigh*
I so hear you! I HATE MORNINGS! I’ve had to do 7 a.m. PT ever since I started ACL recovery in February typically three days a week. Why? I work full time an hour away and otherwise I’d practically be half-time by the time I rolled into or out of the office. I hate the sounds of the alarm, dread them, but there’s something to be said to accomplish so much so early and putting the knee first when it comes to the day’s priorities. Good work in making it the mornings- every day counts!
Avitable: I think I’d rather have ACL surgery again than get up at 5:30.
Finn: I feel for you. I can barely function that early. This is why I scheduled all my college classes for noon or after.
Melissa: That is just plain awful. 7 a.m.! EVERY DAY OF PT!?! I feel for you.
Hey, I hate the morning workouts, too–but I do them anyway.
Besides being worth at least 1/2 a cup of coffee in stimulation, your metabolism usually remains elevated for a good hour or two after a workout. If I exercised right before bed, I’d be lying awake for a few hours trying to fall asleep!
I also find my knee complains much less the rest of the day with morning workouts.
Morning workouts are actually pretty good once you get started. Its the getting up earlier than usual that’s so d@mn difficult.
When I first started reading your blog, I kept finding things we had in common. It was almost spooky. Well, now I know we are not sisters separated at birth…I am a raging MORNING person! LOL I don’t want to get up like anyone else but once my feet hit the floor…that’s it…no more sleeping for me. Good luck with Friday!
I am not a morning person. (Although I find it hard to sleep in anymore.) But like you, I do enjoy the morning workout. It’s just getting my butt up and doing it that’s the problem.
Mornings are overrated.
