Miscellaneous
The bills are rolling in from my ACL reconstruction surgery. I’ve learned a couple things from my itemized hospital bill that I thought I’d share with you.
First, if you’re going to be in the hospital and will require constipation-inducing medications, do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of your own Senokot to take with you to the hospital. If you don’t, you will be charged $3.24 per tablet. Considering you can get them for about 20 cents a piece, I consider this to be a serious rip off. I did not know that hospital Senokot is the equivalent of tablet-shaped gold. Who knew? I would have hoarded those little suckers and sold them on the black market had I known.
You also might want to bring your own ace bandages, should you require them post surgery. You can find them online for about $1. I was given a 4 inch ace bandage that cost $22.00 and a 6 inch ace bandage that cost $24.50. I must have been really out of it from the morphine because I did not think that I had ordered the diamond studded ace bandages.
Normal $1 per ace bandages would have been just fine with me. When you haven’t washed your hair for three days, and you have indentations on your butt from nurses forgetting that you’re still sitting on a bedpan, you’re not really concerned with having flashy and expensive bandages.
When I had those bandages removed by my PT, I told him he could get rid of them. I should have kept them and auctioned them on ebay or something. I had no idea they were so valuable.
I’ve also decided that I’m going to become my own insurance company, as in, I’m going to tell people what I’m willing to pay and what I’m not. I think I’m going to call the hospital and tell them they charged me over the allowable limit for ace bandages and Senokot. I’m also going to tell them that they’re going to need to do a better job itemizing out this:
O.R. Misc Supplies: $735.00
O.R. Misc Supplies: $154.50
O.R. Misc Supplies: $126.70
You’re not seeing double or triple. These are actual charges. If they detail out Senokot tablets, then why can’t I know what constitutes these miscellaneous charges? With those amounts, what could they possibly be?
Piece of gauze: $534.00?
Air in the O.R: $420.00?
Mojito in I.V: $212.00?
O.k., actually forget that last one. I did ask for a mojito in my IV and according to my itemized bill, I certainly got one. Several actually.
I can’t think too much about the state of medical care in the USA right now or my blood pressure goes up… and I might need medical attention, which would surely be my undoing.
This post was so hilarious to me that I had to comment. I love the part about becoming your own insurance company. Hospitals do overcharge!
That’s amazing. I never did read my itemized hospital bills. I checked out a few things from having the babies but not in so much detail. Rip-off indeed.
BBM,
They didn’t quite itemize it all the way for you.
Here is the actual cost breakdown
Senokot tablet $0.25 (the hospital has to make some money)
Surly nurse to not give you water to take it with $2.99
Going home Priceless (sorry couldn’t resist).
Steve: Yes, bills stinks, but I’d rather live here than any other country. I might still be waiting for my surgery.
April: They certainly do, and I see no reason why I shouldn’t be able to negotiate. 😉
August: My hospital bills from babies were great because they were 100% covered. This is not.
Dougis: Love it. 😉
I think this is criminal. Hospitals are just ripping people off because they can.
I actually thought ahead on that one and took some medication that I take daily, but get this…they didn’t let me take it. They still made me take the hospital pills and it cost more than my 3 months supply! They didn’t even verify my prescription…they just took my word for it on my dosage. Unbelievable!
Oh, dear BBM . . . I feel your pain, and I am sorry to say that you got off easy. I know how absurd those prices are, and how screwed up insurance is. They expect your payment on time (and you gladly pay it before you get sick, because, you know, you naively THINK they will actually pay for your healthcare if you need it), and then they play all these games and tell all these lies and simply refuse to pay–AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT! Our government backs their evil ways. I hope you can pay your bills. I was in it for about half a million, and since insurance and my employer screwed me, I got stuck paying October’s bill–which was ONLY fifty grand. Ha. And I even had it easy. There are some surgeries that run a couple million bucks, plus supplemental care. Nobody earns enough money to pay for any of this care. It is depressing. Thinking about insurance has me needing to take another Atenolol so I don’t pop an aneurism. Oh–what is your take on disciplining children? To yell or not to yell? Spank–yea or nay?
I was so concerned about my ER bill from my concussion last month. Before my insurance kicks in, it’s upwards of $1700 for a four hour visit. I figured the potassium pills they gave me would run me at least $20 but I was wrong (only $2) but there are some pretty outrageous fees on there. 4 inches of ace bandage for $22? WTH?
“Steve: Yes, bills stinks, but I’d rather live here than any other country. I might still be waiting for my surgery.”
BBM, it’s not an either/or situation. Politicians and pundits would like for everyone to believe that the only alternative to the collusion and corruption we currently live with in the medical profession is some kind of whacked out, extremist version of socialized healthcare. Maybe as a veteran and an Air Force brat, I’m used to socialized healthcare, because that’s what I grew up with, but I can tell you that I much prefer it to the criminal state of what we’re dealing with now.
The myth is that we have the best healthcare in the world. The reality is that we have terrific emergency care, but our healthcare stinks. If I’m in an accident, I’d rather be here than anywhere else. But for general health matters including preventative care, I don’t think the USA is in the top 30 countries worldwide.
Just to be clear. I’m not suggesting that I want to leave the country. I’m saying that we really need to fix our broken healthcare system.
Have you asked them to audit your bill? It’s SUPPOSED to give you the opportunity to contest the charges.
That’s totally crazy that they can charge as much as they do and not get called on the carpet for it. Makes me think hospitals are in cahoots with the oil companies as far as being in it for making money!!
This is obnoxious–bordering on criminal. I’m surprised they didn’t also bill you for the air you inhaled while you were there. I’m as conservative as they come but something has to be done about this legalized thievery. I can see some of the drug companies justifications for their pricing because of the R&D costs associated with products BUT GAUZE PADS AND ACE BAND-AIDS? This is a little much.
