Karate Camp Day 1 and Injury Report
Day one of summer training camp was today. I had an opportunity to train with Hanshi Miguel Ibarra in Aiki-Jujitsu and Kyoshi Bill Hayes in a style of Shorin-Ryu Karate. I also had a training session on some sword techniques from a 6th Dan, and another session with another Kyoshi and two 6th dans.
I am one of only about four brown belts at this training camp. The rest are all varying degrees of black. There’s nothing like a training camp with that kind of company to make you feel completely insecure about your own skills.
I did learn some really cool things. I’m just worried I’ll have to go back to camp in a complete body cast tomorrow. This skinny bod of mine just doesn’t bounce back in a day the way it happens for kids and young men.
I realize this post is rather disjointed. I’m going to blame that on the bell ringing that took place today when I was dropped on what felt like my neck/head during the aiki-jujitsu session by an aiki-jujitsu black belt candidate. I’ve got a brush burn on the back of my neck to prove it. This post will also serve as a public service announcement to anyone out there thinking that they can wear their wedding rings while doing martial arts. When I was dropped earlier today, I must have landed badly on my left hand. After the static spots cleared, my diamond looked more like a ruby and my fingers had blood on them.
As of tonight, the injury report is as follows:
- Two cut fingers from wedding rings (pinky and middle finger)
- One jammed middle finger
- One bruised upper pinky knuckle
- An entire hand experiencing some hurt (yes, you should totally thank me for even trying to write a post)
- One extremely stiff neck that is spreading into the back, my shoulders, and all around my neck (front, back and sides).
- One brush burn on back of my neck that hurts like you know what when I’m in the shower.
- One foggy brain that saw spots after being dropped in what I will call a rather unfriendly manner.
Tonight, I got to watch black belt testing. I wanted to watch so I know what to expect. It was exciting to watch and gave me some good ideas of things I need to work on.
I’m not the only one who experienced an injury today. Today, Lil C through her head back into Big I and broke what appears to be a blood vessel on top of her nose. Her nose is bruised and was bleeding quite a bit today. I’m just hoping the poor kid doesn’t have a broken nose because she already has so much going against her in the genetic nose department in this family that I’m not sure any of us can handle a broken nose.
I’ll be heading back to camp tomorrow and am going to hope that I am able to turn my head from side to side and bend my fingers a little better. I did natural child birth right? What’s a jammed finger?
Enter ibuprofen and tub full of ice.
Edited to Add: There will be no more karate camp for me except for observation only (Maybe the dinner if I’m not too loopy from the muscle relaxers.) I saw a doctor this morning (Saturday) after waking up in agony. I have a severe case of whiplash/neck sprain that will require physical therapy starting next week. I’ve been prescribed muscle relaxers, some pretty heavy duty pain medication, a soft collar for alternating with ice application, and some gentle neck strectches. Someone please remind me to never try aiki-jujitsu again.
Rough first day! The guy who threw you sounds like a putz in the true Yiddish meaning of the word.
I didn’t realize that you were so interested in bloodsports! At this rate, you’ll be ready to fight on a professional MMA card before long! When you do, let me know and I’ll be sure to come and cheer for you.
Hope you have a better day tomorrow, and I’d be interested to hear more about that black belt testing. Was it what you expected? Harder? Not as hard? I’ve heard that some styles are more brutal than others.

Well it sounds like you had an interesting day anyway!! And I’m with Steve, the guy that threw you doesn’t sound like he was paying attention to his partner!
Shame to have to learnt the ring lesson the hard way though! I bet it stung like a ….
I hope day 2 isn’t quite as battering.

And thank heaven that you aren’t allergic to the stuff like I am. Ibuprofin and aspirin, and I can have a reaction if I take too high a dose of acetominophen as well. Ice has become my best friend.
I’m glad you got to see a black belt test. When my friend from New York came down for mine, she told me that in her association, kyu ranks aren’t allowed to know what goes on at a black belt test. She was surprised when I’d told her I’d already seen three.
Oh, I hope your neck heals quickly!
I’m glad you have the right priorities (Karate=fun; Life and health=important) and didn’t do the whole “no pain, no gain” thing that a lot of meat heads say!
Oh man. So sorry about you injury, I do hope you’ll recover fast.
When I checked out aiki-jujitsu at a workshop years ago we didn’t work throws at all. Mostly wrist locks and arm bars in a standup fashion. Normally they discourage dangerous techniques at seminars, such as sweeps. At least you got to watch a shodan test. What style was it for?
Feel better.
Ouch BBM! Those Karate Camps can be rough and it looks like you got the lion’s share of it. Maybe you should’ve just skipped the whole experience and let somebody drop an axe kick on you then gone straight away to a spa. (#);D
How awful! Hope you feel better. Neck injuries can’t be any fun. 🙁 What a lousy introduction to a style, to leave the first demonstration with a painful injury. That wouldn’t happen at RDMA.
I was in martial arts long before I met my husband. Thus, I chose my wedding ring with martial arts in mind. If we have to do any punching on the bag or pad I do remove it and tuck it quickly into my exercise bra, then retrieve it after the exercise. I do it so fast that even my partner of many years has not seen me do it.
I just came across your blog about martial arts and I wanted to tell you how impressed I was with the information you have posted here. I also have a website so I know what I’m talking about when I say your site is top-notch! Also, I hope your neck heals real soon and be careful with those wedding rings, ouch.
Ouch, that’s not at all cool. The person who threw you should really have been paying more attention to his Tori and how she was falling. If you can, see a massage therapist, but one who knows how to deal with whiplash. It will get you back on your feet quicker and prevent further injury to your neck. Hope you heal well and fast…
He broke rule #1: Know your Tori.
This stuff makes me so mad…as an Aikidoka the most important thing you can do when training is know your partner well enough to know what kind of strain their bodies can take, and what kind of force is necessary to correctly demonstrate a technique.
By the way, i’m getting the same spammer on my comments, trying to peddle his martial arts supplies – I think we got him from the Convocation. 🙁
Oh wow. I hope you feel better very soon. That sounds very painful.
im in martial arts too just yesterday i had too break a 1 board i did after that i had too break three boards stacked onto eachother i tried my hardest i ended up dislocating my pinky knuckle it hurt very bad my trainer master ston lee pulled it back into place the swelling hasnt gone down and it still hurts .
